Wirex Card Review (2020): Best Bitcoin Debit Card

Wirex is a multi-currency account which supports a range of national currencies (like GBP, EUR, and USD) and cryptocurrencies (like Bitcoin). It not only provides you with fully functional traditional fiat wallets which work just like a normal bank account, but Wirex also allows you to store and transfer your cryptocurrency in the same place.

But Wirex’s crypto debit card is what sets it apart. This allows you to shop in-store and online, just like you would with a normal Visa debit card.

In this Wirex card review, we’re going to look at what makes it the best Bitcoin (BTC) debit card that’s available in the UK and Europe. We’ll cover everything you need to know: all the main features, what countries and cryptocurrencies are supported by Wirex, and more.

Advantages & Disadvantages

Wirex Card Features

Wirex Bitcoin Debit Card (Example Card)

You can use the Wirex card in-store and online anywhere that Visa is normally accepted. This means that it’s supported in millions of places includes supermarkets, restaurants, and online retailers like Amazon. The Wirex card has contactless support too, so you can use it in-store with just a swipe.

You can order a GBP, EUR, or USD version of the Wirex card (or get all three). Your choice determines the main currency that the card works in.

You’ll also get up to 1.5% in cashback (in BTC) every time you use your Wirex card in-store. To get the maximum rate, you have to buy and hold quite a lot of Wirex Token (WRX) in your Wirex account. If you don’t have any Wirex Token (WRX) in your account, then you’ll only get 0.5% cashback.

Payment Methods

If you’re from the UK, you’ll get local account details (i.e. an account number and sort code) as well as international details for SWIFT bank transfers. For those in the EU, you’ll get details for SEPA bank transfers. You can use these to deposit funds into your Wirex account for free or receive money from others.

You can also deposit money into your Wirex account with a debit or credit card, but there is a maximum deposit of $5,000 per day. If you want to deposit more that, you can also use a UK bank transfer to deposit funds. It’s not instant, but your money will be credited in less than an hour and there’s no limit on how much you can send.

Wirex Card Fees

Wirex’s fees are transparent and competitive.

You can order a Wirex card and get it delivered for free, but there’s a monthly maintenance fee of £1.00 / €1.20 / $1.50 for each card you have. It’s not much and you’ll earn more than that back in cashback if you make in-store purchases.

You won’t pay any fees to deposit money into your Wirex account via any of the supported payment methods.

These are Wirex’s ATM fees:

Fee or LimitAmount
ATM Fee (Inside EU)£1.75 / €2.25 / $2.50
ATM Fee (International)£2.25 / €2.75 / $3.50
ATM Limit (Daily)$250 (equivalent in local currency)

Wirex Limits

There’s no maximum balance that can be stored in your Wirex account. There’s also no limit on the amount of cryptocurrency or fiat currency that you can exchange back and forth.

There are some limits you should know about, although most people won’t have an issue with them.

LimitAmount

Cryptocurrency Fees

When you’re buying, selling, or exchanging cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (BTC) on Wirex, you’ll be quoted with the wholesale exchange rate. When we checked, it was very close to the real BTC to GBP exchange rate.

However, you will be charged a 1% fee whenever you buy, sell, or exchange cryptocurrency with Wirex.

As BittyBot’s Bitcoin (BTC) price comparison shows, this makes Wirex one of the cheapest places to buy Bitcoin (BTC) in the UK and Europe.

BittyBot Price Comparison (Wirex Ranking)

There are cryptocurrency exchanges like Coinbase Pro or Kraken that are cheaper, but they’re not as convenient or beginner-friendly as Wirex.

Wirex Alternatives

Wirex vs Coinbase Card

Coinbase Card Website

Coinbase Card is a crypto debit card that was released in 2019. It provides a slick, easy, and quick way to spend cryptocurrencies stored in your Coinbase account in-store and online. But which is better? Wirex or Coinbase Card?

Here are the key differences between Wirex vs Coinbase Card:

Fee or LimitWirexCoinbase Card
Card IssuanceFree£4.95
Card DeliveryFreeFree
Account Management Fee£1 per monthFree
Cryptocurrency Exchange Fee1%2.49%
Cashback (In-Store)Up to 1.5%0%
ATM Withdrawal Fee (Domestic)£1.75Free (up to £200/month)
1% (more than £200/month)
ATM Withdrawal Fee (International)£2.25Free (up to £200/month)
2% (more than £200/month)

In our opinion, Wirex is the best crypto debit card in the United Kingdom and Europe right now. It allows you to spend Bitcoin (BTC) and other cryptocurrencies with a debit card like normal currencies, but without the high fees you’ll find charged by other crypto debit cards like the Coinbase Card.

Find out more about it in this Coinbase Card review.

Wirex vs Revolut

Revolut's Cryptocurrency Dashboard

Revolut isn’t offering Bitcoin (BTC) debit cards like Wirex.

Instead, they allow you to buy Bitcoin (BTC) and four other cryptocurrencies using their mobile app. You can also mess around with some settings so that you spend from your cryptocurrency balance when you use your Revolut card.

But here’s the catch. Not only will you be charged a fee of about 2.49% (included in the quoted exchange rate), but you also cannot deposit to your cryptocurrency wallet or withdraw any cryptocurrency you buy. You can find out more about this here.

It’s absolutely nothing like the Wirex or Coinbase Card. We would not recommend it.

Final Thoughts: Best Crypto Debit Card

There are a few noteworthy crypto debit cards that will be released in the next year or so, but there aren’t that many options in the UK or EU at the moment. But of the ones that are available, we think that Wirex is the best Bitcoin (BTC) debit card option you have.

It doesn’t cost anything to get an account and order a Wirex card to try it out. There is a £1.00 / €1.20 / $1.50 account maintenance fee, but you do get up to 1.5% in cashback when you use your card in-store which offsets that monthly cost.

And once you have an account, you can quickly and easily buy Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Litecoin (LTC), and more at competitive rates – just 1% for all cryptocurrency exchanges. Wirex is frequently shown as the cheapest way to buy Bitcoin (BTC) in the UK and EU on BittyBot.
